Erik Heide grew up in Stenungsund. In 1998 he graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Music after studying with Milan Vitek and Tim Frederiksen. This was followed by further studies at the Musikhochschule in Cologne, as well as with the Alban Berg Quartet and with Ralf Gothoni in Helsinki. Today he is concertmaster of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and of the Danish Chamber Orchestra as well as guest concertmaster of several orchestras around Europe.

Erik has been active in Denmark for a long time and is considered one of the country's most celebrated chamber musicians. The list of awards and prestigious posts is still long. He was first concertmaster of Copenhagen Phil between 2004–2019 and primarius of the Diamond Ensemble in the Royal Library between 2007–2018. With the Diamond Ensemble, he played eight concerts annually that were broadcast live on Danish P2 together with soloists such as Andras Schiff and Sarah Chang.

Erik is also one of the members of Trio Ondine, with whom he has won awards such as DR Artist of the Year, New Generation Artists from the BBC as well as the Audience Award (and additional awards) at both the ARD Competition in Munich and the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. On records released by the Danish record label Dacapo, he has also scooped both Editor's Choice and Grammy nominations as a soloist.

Erik is also an esteemed professor at the University of Stavanger where he teaches violin and is Head of Strings. From 2022 he is professor in violin and Head of Strings at Malmö Academy of Music.
