The cellist Niels Ullner was born 1956 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was educated by the Danish cellist Asger Lund Christiansen and completed his studies with Pierre Fournier, William Pleeth and Mstislav Rostropovich. Debut recital in Copenhagen 1981.
Awarded the Jacob Gade Prize, Artist Prize of the Danish Music Critics, Memorial Prize of the Breuning-Bache String Quartet.
Member of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1977 to 1985. Since then employed as principal cellist of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra (Sweden).


Since 1986 Niels Ullner taught at the Music Academies in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense and Malmö. From 2000 he is permanently attached to the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense, Denmark. Furthermore he has been coaching in numerous international music courses and took part in international juries.


Niels Ullner performed as a sololist or chamber musician over most of Europe, Japan and Cuba. He has been a member of several chamber music groups like The Danish String Quartet, Musica Danica and duo partnership with the Danish pianist, Anne Øland.
1995 he was nominated for a Swedish Grammy for his recording of the Sinfonia Concertante for cello and orchestra by Gösta Bystroem with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra conducted by Paavo Järvi.

Niels Ullner plays a master instrument built in Cremona 1667 by Francesco Ruggiero, which was purchased by Malmö Symphony Orchestra 1992.
