José Valente is considered one of the most promising accordionists of his generation. He began his musical studies at the age of 10, under the guidance of accordionist Paulo Jorge Ferreira, at Conservatório Municipal D. Dinis. At 18, he was admitted at Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas do Instituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco (ESART), where he completed his Master in Music (Accordion Specialization), in March 2013, under the guidance of professors Paulo Jorge Ferreira and Maria Luísa Correia Castilho. During the academic year 2010/2011, ESART awarded him a merit scholarship, for having obtained the best grades among all the students from the music’s faculty. In 2015, he was admitted at The Royal Danish Academy of Music, where he completed an Advanced Postgraduate Diploma – soloist, in April 2018, under the guidance of professor Geir Draugsvoll. He was the first Portuguese to be admitted into the soloist class, at this academy. In 2019, he became an accordion teacher at the same academy.
José won several awards at national and international level:
- 1st prize at Concurso de Acordeão de Castelo Branco – Folefest (Portugal, 2008, junior category);
- 1st prize at Concurso de Acordeão de Castelo Branco – Folefest (Portugal, 2009, senior and chamber music categories);
- 1st prize at Concurso de Acordeão de Castelo Branco – Folefest (Portugal, 2012, chamber music category);
- 1st prize at 6th Concurso de Jovens Intérpretes de Caldas da Rainha (Portugal, 2009);
- 1st prize at competition Prémio Jovens Músicos 2014 (Portugal, concert accordion category, advanced level);
- 1st prize ex aequo at 17th Concurso de Interpretação do Estoril | Prémio El Corte Inglés (Portugal, 2015);
- 1st prize at RDAM Scholarship Competition 2016 (competition for all instruments, at The Royal Danish Academy of Music);
- 1st prize at PIF 2016 – 41st Castelfidardo International Accordion Prize (Italy, Premio category);
- golden medal at 1st Vienna International Music Competition (Professional category, 2019);
- golden medal at 4th Manhattan International Music Competition (Professional category, 2019);
- golden medal at the 2nd Berliner International Music Competition (Professional category, 2019).
Also at competition PJM 2014, he got the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth prize (EMCY) and one Gulbenkian Scholarship from Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. He was the first soloist accordionist to receive the EMCY prize. He was also the first Portuguese to win the Scholarship Competition at The Royal Danish Academy of Music.
He has performed with Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, Orquestra de Câmara de Cascais e Oeiras, Orquestra Clássica da Madeira, Orquestra Gulbenkian, Orquestra Sinfónica Metropolitana, Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música and Remix Ensemble Casa da Música, under the baton of the great conductors Cesário Costa, Daniele Giulio Moles, Misha Rachlevsky, Nikolay Lalov, Pedro Carneiro, Peter Rundel, Olari Elts and Sian Edwards. He has given masterclasses in Denmark (The Royal Danish Academy of Music), Germany (University of Music in Detmold), Lithuania (Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre), Poland (The Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music) and Portugal (Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas, Universidade de Aveiro and Universidade de Évora). He has also collaborated with recognized composers, such as Anders Skibsted, Carlos Azevedo, Gustav Bjerre, Francesco Filidei, Jon Lin Chua, Jörg Widmann, Lasse Winterbottom, Loïc Destremau, Matias Vestergård Hansen, Nuno da Rocha, Rebecca Saunders, among others, having premiered several works.
He has performed concerts in Belgium, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Spain, UK and USA, having performed at famous halls such as Casa da Música (Suggia Hall), Centro Cultural de Belém (Concert Hall), Den Sorte Diamant, Elbphilharmonie (Großer Saal), Gulbenkian (Concert Hall), Kölner Philharmonie, Koncertkirken, Laeiszhalle, Merkin Concert Hall, Musikhuset København, Philharmonie de Paris (Salle des Concerts), Pierre Boulez Saal, Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, Tivoli, The Royal Danish Academy of Music (Concert Hall), Wigmore Hall, among others. He has perfomed at international music festivals, such as:

He has also been invited as a jury member at Semana Internacional de acordeão Alcobaça (Portugal) and Premio Internazionale della Fisarmonica di Castelfidardo (Italy).
In October 2014, his dissertation, “Concert accordion in Portugal – perceptions and expectations”, was published by AvA Musical Editions. This study includes the participation of renowned Portuguese musicians: António Victorino d'Almeida, Carlos Marecos, Cristóvão Silva, Fernando Ribeiro, Joaquim Raposo, Paulo Jorge Ferreira, Sérgio Azevedo and Vitorino Matono.
In 2019, he recorded his first album, Modern Music Spectrum, which was published by Aulicus Classics label. The album contains some of the most recognized compositions within the music literature for classical accordion. The album's last piece, Plus I (for accordion and clarinet), was recorded together with the prestigious clarinetist Giovanni Punzi.
